The first Mortal Kombat set a trend in fighting games, a trend that no one would dare to cross. Its first sequel, Mortal Kombat II, built upon it and made it even better. The violence has been increased to new heights and the game is a lot darker than its predecessor. It is my favorite sequel in the MK series, though there are others that have followed.

The character count has nearly doubled to twelve. New characters include Kung Lao, Kitana, Jax, Mileena, and Baraka. Returning are Liu Kang, Shang Tsung, Reptile, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Johnny Cage, and Raiden. Gone are Kano and Sonya, though they appear in the background on one of the stages now. All twelve characters have their unique set of moves, strengths, and weaknesses.

The blood and violence that made Mortal Kombat a household name for gamers is still completely intact, and the fatalities that have become the signature of the series have gotten even more graphic. Each character now has two different fatalities (except Shang Tsung, who has three). There are also three stage fatalities which everyone can perform: In the Dead Pool (where you knock your opponent into the acid pool on the side), in the Kombat Tomb (where you knock your opponent into a bed of spikes above the stage), and in the Pit II (where you knock your opponent into a concrete ground below the stage).

To add a bit of humor into the game, Mortal Kombat II introduced two alternatives to fatalities: Friendships and Babalities. These friendships range from Scorpion, Sub Zero, and Reptile dolls, to Liu Kang dancing disco, to Kung Lao playing fetch with a dog with his hat, among many other very funny things. And Babalities were simply a type of finisher in which the opponent was turned into a baby. To perform these, you can't press any of the punch buttons in the winning round, and perform the motion when "Finish Him!" or "Finish Her!" comes up.

The gameplay remains the same as its predecessor. You still have your High Punch, Low Punch, High Kick, and Low Kick, and holding directions while pressing these allows you to whip out more powerful attacks. The gameplay is a bit faster, and the controls remain the same.

In the single player mode, you work your way up the ladder, just like you do in the first game. This time, there are no endurance matches and your mirror match can come at any time, unlike the first game where you had to wait until all the other characters were defeated. Beating the first eleven characters grants you a match with Shang Tsung, the boss from the first game (who now has youth). He plays largely like the other eleven characters this time. Beating Shang Tsung means you go on to face Kintaro, a four armed half human half tiger. He is faster and more agile than his predecessor, Goro. Beating Kintaro was much harder than the other characters, just like Goro was hard to beat in the first game. Getting past Kintaro grants you a match with Shao Kahn, the ruler of Outworld (the setting of the game). Shao Kahn tends to taunt you occasionally, giving you a free shot at him if you're fast enough. But he is fast and his attacks do more damage than normal. Beating Shao Kahn means you win the title of Mortal Kombat champion once again.

This will be continued in part two.
